Transgender identity and Hellenic Polytheism.

Hello everyone Χαίρετε! Salvete omnes!  I am a Greco-Roman or Hellenic polytheist, I've been involved in some Hellenic and Roman reconstructionist circles recently. I also use the term pagan for myself, but in this article, I will refrain from using that and just focus on polytheist instead. Lots of trans people have different religions or none at all, but we are talking about mine specifically or at least people who practice similarly and from the same set of pantheon that we attribute to Ancient Greece and even Rome to some degree. We will start with some brief summary of the history. One of the first thing comes to mind is the Gallae priestesses of Magna Mater in Rome, which is the Latin epithet for the Anatolian goddess Cybele as the Great Mother. Cybele is from the east and it was the Greeks who introduced Cybele through a Sybil that foresaw her cult as being an integral part of the Pax Deorum (Peace of the Gods) in Rome and the public cults. Mother Goddesses are important in ...

Ocyrhoë's Curse (Good Ending)

In Ovid's Metamorphoses, the daughter of Chiron, Ocyrhoë, found herself in a perilous situation. She had the gift of prophecy and she foretold a son of Apollo with the ability to heal and even raise mortals and spirits from the realm of Death. Later we know that she predicted the rise of the great healer Asclepius, who learned the ability from Chiron. Jove took to this rise of power from demigod who defies the natural order of life death, even Apollo himself dares not to defy his Father. Fearing the wrath of Jove, she sought a way to escape his anger. In her desperation, she turned to the Goddess Diana for help. With a heavy heart, Ocyrhoë humbly petitioned Diana, explaining her dire circumstances and her wish to avoid Jove's wrath. Diana, moved by Ocyrhoë's plea, saw the sincerity and genuine fear in her eyes. Recognizing Ocyrhoë's pure intentions and her desire for self-preservation, Diana decided to grant her request. But she knew that a significant transformation wa...

How is ADHD even real?

Hello everyone!  This is Diana, your writer, and I have ADHD. It's like "yeah and?"– however, the point is not me today, but what I have. So, ADHD, short for Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. It was also known as ADD, pretty much the same thing without the H The DSM-V defines it as  A. A persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development, as characterized by 1. Inattention: Six (or more) of the following symptoms have persisted for at least 6 months to a degree that is inconsistent with developmental level and that negatively impacts directly on social and academic/occupational activities:and/or 2. Hyperactivity and impulsivity: Six (or more) of the following symptoms have persisted for at least 6 months to a degree that is inconsistent with developmental level and that negatively impacts directly on social and academic/occupational activities: It gives further examples of behaviors and actions ...

In Defense of Stimming: How the autistic mind actually pays attention

Hello everyone I've been in a slump and I wanted to get some good paying jobs for structure and of course for big moneys, as the kids say I am quite sure that in many cases especially when I get a face to face interview I have been denied the job and sometimes they end the interview early, simply because I am autistic, and I also have ADHD. This is more of an informal blog leaning heavily on my own personal life. I think stimming is part of it, and I wish I do not have to call that out but unfortunately it seems to be frowned upon in the professional world and I never get the chance to defend myself on that or have any true allies with sympathetic and open minds. For the record, stimming here means any self-regulation behaviors and actions one does, especially autistic and neurodivergent people. All I know is that it just helps me, even if I look weird doing it. Please be considerate and kind, and mind your own business. Let me act naturally.

A Hellenist's review of Natalie Haynes' Pandora's Jar: Women in the Greek Myths (Pandora the first woman ever)

Hello everyone The first chapter is the eponymous Pandora, she is famous for giving us the idiom "Pandora's Box" but as Haynes pointed out, it was not a box, but a jar or vase. The story of Pandora comes from Hesiod's works appearing both in Theogony and more detailed in Works and Days . The famous Pandora's box is indeed a πίθος (píthos) and it is like a barrel since it typically held liquid and was part of freight. Pandora is known as the first woman of Ancient Greek mythology, and Haynes herself makes a comparison to mythic story of Eve in the Hebrew Bible, which is already an often used comparison. Remember kids, the Bible is Christian Mythology too, as most religions have mythologies. The way this story is told is that Pandora opened her jar, either for curiosity or malice, and had released something evil and hardships, and Hesiod sets this after Prometheus steals Fire itself from the Gods, in particular Zeus. The story ends with her only finding hope in it...

Hellenism in Popular Culture: My Little Pony (Part One) Overview and introduction

Hello everypony, I mean everyone Today I'm writing something that is a culmination of many things I hold dear to me both culturally and spiritually This series explores how the values of Hellenism and similar religions and spiritual paths still teach us today and how they show up in different parts of cultural media, from stories directly based on the classical mythological canon, to stories derived from it in some way, and others especially fantasy series that take many elements from it but ultimately share a value system or morality rooted in what all Hellenic Polytheists share generally, that is virtues like Xenia, Charis, Eusebia, and Ariste. My Little Pony Friendship is Magic overview and franchise history This was a show that ran in the 2010s and was the fourth generation of the popular and established toy and media franchise My Little Pony that started in the 1980s, that much is clear, Friendship is Magic the show and anything related to that directly will be called G4 in t...

Confessions of Isolation

Hello My name is Diana, and I am a loner, or I am lonely, it really makes no difference, maybe there is, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Are we not also lonely here? The past two years caused by many things, we don't need to talk about the details, we already pretend everything is back to normal again. Though what is normal? Normal, as the cliche goes, is just a setting on a washing machine.  I think of myself as just plain crazy in a normal way, like I know I am mentally unwell with verified labels and others I can just speculate and think I might have, but that is beyond the scope of this blog.  Being a freelance writer is kinda of a lonely job especially when prior mental and physical health issues seem to get in your way. I try my best to network, build community, make friends, meet with loved ones and so forth– anything or anyone can help though specific details will make or break the level of comfort and intimacy we may go with, not to overshare too much of course....

A Neoplatonic Pagan Philosophical introduction on The Problem of Evil

Hello everyone, Salvete Omnes The famous problem of Evil often attributed by Ancient Greek Philosopher Epicurus follows as this "God, he says, either wishes to take away evils, and is unable; or He is able, and is unwilling; or He is neither willing nor able, or He is both willing and able. If He is willing and is unable, He is feeble, which is not in accordance with the character of God; if He is able and unwilling, He is envious, which is equally at variance with God; if He is neither willing nor able, He is both envious and feeble, and therefore not God; if He is both willing and able, which alone is suitable to God, from what source then are evils? Or why does He not remove them" This exact formulation is actually from De ira Dei , a treatise by the Early Christian writer Lactantius, who definitely heard of Epicurus being from the Eastern Roman Empire who sought to make a philosophical tradition contrast with what he (presumably) saw as pagan hogwash and he was...

As an Autistic Adult: The Introduction to a Conversation

Hello everyone! This is Diana of BDUnicorn  I started this in the end of autism month, which was April,  so yet again I want to make a quick little rambling conversational blog for that and also to release myself from a hiatus driven by insecurities and perfectionism, which like autism is a big part of my own mental health. What is the deal with autism? I know right? Why is autism almost always portrayed as a children's thing? Where are the autistic adults like me? It's not uncommon for many autistic adults to find out that they're autistic when they are 20+ or 30+ and so on, I however always knew that I was autistic because I had an early diagnosis at the behest of my parents carefully scrutinizing my own development as a toddler and child.   Last year I had discussed why many autistic people were disproportionately trans and queer, also some musings about fashion and sensory stimulation. But this year I want people to talk about us, the adult autistics who us...

Personal Car Reviews: 1999 Mercedes Benz C280 Sport

OLD originally written in 2016   Hello everyone this was an old draft that I am showing for the first time! Enjoy- Diana. Trying hard to look like BMW, the 190E Electric Boogaloo?  This was my first car. I enjoyed driving it as a daily and fun car. It did both well. Daimler wants you to call it a “Compact Executive Car” and it was Mercedes Benz’s smallest car until they made the A-Class in 1997. I owned it for over  4 years. However, there are some flaws like the rust. I underestimated the rust. Apparently, Mercedes skimped on the rust proofing, perhaps as cost cutting measures due some struggles with sales, especially because MB’s deadliest rival, BMW spanked them in sales, oh and BMW spanked Mercedes like they were a mommy domme punishing a bratty little girl and the nouveau riche Lexus upstart also became a sales rival, and got into Mercedes’ BUSINESS by undercutting, going right for the taint. The late nineties were so bad for Daimler that they...

As a trans woman I think that...: A Short Essay on Transmisogyny

But but why would you wanna be a woman?! Why not, being a woman absolutely rules! Especially a trans woman, yet not everyone agrees especially those are absolutely against us. We debate, argue, and just ask the hard hitting questions. Are trans women women? Of course they are. Trans women are women!  This is what qualifies as ally-ship on twitter these days.  I get the intent though, and it is true– 100% and no falsehoods, however, it comes of as a meaningless platitude because it is backed up with no deeper thought or action. I have been reading Whipping Girl by Julia Serano and also TransGressive by Rachel Anne Williams, two books by trans women. The former is a foundational text for transfeminism and Serano's thesis is laying out transmisogyny as part of a core analytical theme of transmisogyny. It is a good read, provided you think like an academic, otherwise it is pretty dry. Think of my essay as the ketchup on a hamburger. So in this essay, I will provide a quick si...

Sighs-o-Plenty (Poem)

To my loved ones, Wake up cold and warm burning an aching numbing it’s a warning   My soul sighs and my mind freezes Why doth not it to myself appeases?   Cry, weep, and scream out your heart; these will be the best and worst part  Of mornings of mourning till still noon. Yet hours post Meridiem go too soon   Evening and cocktail hour are upon us; We pray to those who fight and not fuss  At night aim our hearts at truest targets, then after we shall know what it begets! ***  -Diana Beatrice Asteria Thank you for reading  Support independent arts and writing today on Patreon!

Lyrical Cosmos (Poem)

Image
by Brittany Diana Sing a song about life, write about your love, for this is your true power. From the sky, let the thunder of victory roar, the lightning flashes over. And the sun warms everything, as it rises and sets each day and night. Moon guides you with the sun’s reflection in each night with its might Stars above they are tiny worlds upon worlds sharing the fires of life Hunt the light’s fire of the sky, let the air blow, and let water come alive Earth is substance taking everything in earnest, but the ether is nothing Void and spirit are alike indeed, just like the animal’s mind and doing. Cosmos, chasms, space, let matter sing, fly, and march for all of time. Gods and Goddesses, give and show us your magic that is the sublime. Io natalis, for the sun, stars, earth, moon, and planets are all now born. Let life grow from, to, and on each plane, and grow like a field of corn. Fire, Air, Water, and Earth, the manifestations of all the spiritual matters, Of which life shall ...

Patreon Poetry Medley from 30 July 2021

Poems written in July 2021 by Miss Brittany Diana   Quid est homo? What is a man but a miserable pile of secrets? Said the vampire The humans are quite pathetic indeed, for that it will not inspire Quid homo est et quid est vir?

To Remember Memories: A self-reflection on my past and present identities.

Image
Hello everyone, I am Diana Eakin, or that's what I have been calling myself for a couple years now. Though that was not always the case. I doubt any reader would know otherwise. I first created BDunicorn as a platform to express myself and build my portfolio as a writer, poet, essayist, so many things are ahead of me. Yet, having a plan is actually quite new to me. I'll explain why later. I have been thinking a lot about my life, how it went, how it is going, and how it will go in the future. In this piece, I want to explore memory, using my past and how it relates to myself now.  This is will be my bio-mytho-graphy, to borrow a phrase from Audre Lorde, who was introduced to be by the new and familiar Abigail Thorn of Philosophy Tube. At time of writing this, I had seen her most recent video called Identity: A trans coming out story. That was truly inspiring because I had resonated with almost everything she had said, and of course had loaded it with the philosophy So, first...

Fire to Stars

Image
Poem by Brittany of the Unicorns See the embers become the stars above in the sky and voice of space They become their own fires in the sky that are the light on our face These show the bright love in our lives, that is the hearth of the home Everything is bigger and smaller versions of each other, under a dome Big and small, the universe is an organism, and so is the multiverse Each is like a cell inside, layers of cells indeed, so vast and diverse. We are the multiverse, universe, galaxy, stars, sun, moon, and earth. Great goddesses, gives us the fire from the stars to light our hearth Want to see this earlier? Support us on Patreon!

Sisyphos of Capital

Image
An existentialist ode to the working person   Hustle, grind, wake, and be productive, oh thou paragon of work Never stop because it is unstoppable even if thou stopest the rock Rise and push, even if thou fallst down and gettest thyself back up Keep going, it is your destiny to move it up, take a sip from the cup Now, drop and give us more, give us 120%, perfect is never enough Work shall set ye all free, what does not kill thee, makes thee tough. Then the stone rolls back, crushed, pushed down, it is truly the last end Work for what or for whom, this is something that shall never suspend I am not strong enough ergo I must try again, again, again, and again One must imagine themselves happy, yet thou art never happy, it is ruin. Thy ruin at the great eternal stone that is to be pushed up on the mountain Jump, give it up, and now you shall become happy, in the great unknown. -Brittany Support my blog! https://www.patreon.com/bdunicorn

Fragments of Energy

Image
The Sun is a star, and the moon is a planet, these are the signs Each star and planet, big or small, are surely cosmic designs In the night, we see the stars shine like candles or lamps of heat In the day, there is just the sun, no star can ever dare to compete. Moon reflects the Sun, and the stars above too, to the earth Each burning bright star certainly belongs to us as a hearth. Hail to the Morningstar the harbinger of the day’s sunlight Thou art Venus, named after the Goddess so fair and bright She is a worthy being of love, and the planet is quite hot. Beauty too is her domain, and beauty is like a small dot Nowhere and everywhere, this is the energy of essences And the essence of energy is movement and the senses. Oh how each star inspires me with its great and far might It shows to me that love, beauty, and magic are so bright. Let these words pay their respects to energy and to life So that I can stop and do fun things with my void wife. -Brittany  Support bdunicorn...
